Until recently, scientists considered huge ice sheets to be fairly permanent blocks of ice. Now, a strange new find eight miles beneath the surface of Greenland ice is threatening to overturn that theory. Scientists have evidence that some regions of the Greenland Ice Sheet can start to slowly flow and circulate internally through a process referred to as thermal convection, which is normally applied to terrestrial Earth's hot mantle instead of solid ice. This discovery challenges scientists' understanding of how ice behaves, how climate systems work and the future of our ever-changing planet.
