Customs Intercept Drugs Concealed in Seafood at Bahrain Airport; Court Case Underway

Customs officers at Bahrain International Airport uncovered a bold attempt to smuggle illegal drugs concealed inside dried fish and shrimp, leading to the detention of a man and woman and charges for narcotics trafficking.

Authorities became suspicious when examining the suspects’ suitcases as they were about to pass through customs. Upon closer inspection, officers found narcotics hidden inside six transparent bags placed within dried fish and shrimp, as well as drug packets placed among the individuals’ clothing.

The suspects denied the allegations during their appearance before the High Criminal Court (First Circuit), which has scheduled a verdict hearing and ordered that both remain in custody pending the outcome.

The Public Prosecution has formally charged the pair with importing and possessing narcotics with intent to traffic in 2025, in violation of Bahraini law.

Drug smuggling remains a key focus for Bahraini authorities, with recent operations and arrests by the Anti-Narcotics Directorate and Customs Affairs highlighting continued efforts to curb narcotics trafficking through the island kingdom’s borders.

Officials warn that smugglers use increasingly sophisticated concealment methods, underscoring the importance of vigilant customs inspections and legal enforcement to protect the community from the dangers of illegal drugs.
