Bahrain Mandates 50% Onsite Work for Government Staff Starting April 5
Civil Service Bureau Revises Remote Work Policy with New Attendance Caps and Enhanced Emergency Preparedness Requirements
The Civil Service Bureau of Bahrain has issued a new directive revising the nation's remote work policy, mandating that in-office attendance for government entities be capped at 50% of the workforce. The updated arrangement takes effect on Sunday, April 5, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.

The decision aims to strike a balance between operational flexibility and the continuity of public services. Under the new framework, individual government departments retain the authority to manage their specific attendance schedules, provided they adhere to the 50% ceiling. However, the directive includes a crucial caveat: sectors where the nature of work necessitates full physical presence to serve the public interest will be exempt from the cap. Each entity is tasked with identifying which roles and employees fall under these exemptions based on their specific operational needs.
Beyond attendance adjustments, the directive places a significant emphasis on workplace safety and emergency preparedness. All government bodies are instructed to strictly adhere to guidelines issued by the General Directorate of Civil Defense. These measures cover critical safety protocols, including the maintenance of alarm systems, evacuation plans, and other precautionary measures within work premises.
To ensure compliance and readiness, each government entity must establish a dedicated team responsible for coordinating with relevant authorities during emergencies. Furthermore, these bodies are required to implement comprehensive awareness and training programs to enhance employee readiness in handling potential crises.
The Civil Service Bureau will monitor the implementation of these measures through a system of regular weekly reports. These submissions will track compliance levels, assess overall preparedness, and verify adherence to the newly reinforced safety standards across the public sector.
