Bahrain Climbs to Third Among Arab Nations for Startup Ecosystem Excellence

Bahrain has secured a prestigious position in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2024/2025 report, ranking third among Arab countries and seventh globally for having the best start-up environment.

The Kingdom’s strong National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI) score of 5.8 highlights the country’s growing appeal for entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators alike.

This ranking reflects Bahrain’s long-term strategic vision, notably framed around its Economic Vision 2030, which places entrepreneurship at the heart of sustainable economic growth. Under this strategy, the country has been actively developing incentives, regulatory reforms, and infrastructure to support startup formation and scale-ups.

One of the standout features of Bahrain’s ecosystem is its easy business setup process. Entrepreneurs report that regulations, licensing and administrative procedures are increasingly streamlined, lowering barriers for both local founders and foreign startups looking to establish a presence.

Access to funding has also improved markedly. A combination of public-sector programs, private investors, and venture capital interest is helping early-stage and growth-stage startups find the financial resources they need. Complementing this are strong mentorship networks, incubators, and accelerators providing founders with guidance, skill development, and connections.

Another key aspect of Bahrain’s rise is its focus on female entrepreneurship. The report notes that policies have increasingly addressed gender disparities by offering women greater access to leadership positions, funding, and supporting environments. This inclusivity is reinforcing darker-horse potential in the startup community.

Bahrain’s emergence as a regional leader follows its peers like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which also feature among top Arab economies for startup environment quality. Together, these nations are actively shaping the future of entrepreneurship in the Middle East through policy reforms, tech-friendly legislation, and national programs that foster innovation.
