None of it seemed like abuse at the time. That is the part that is hardest to explain to people who have not lived it. There were no raised fists, no screaming matches, no dramatic moments that made it obvious something was wrong. There were only requests, framed as preferences, offered with a smile, packaged as love. Could you wear your hair differently? Could you text me when you arrive?
