Indian Students Detained for Freedom Flotilla Protest

Several Indian students and activists from the Delhi unit of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) were arrested on Tuesday, June 10, for their Freedom Flotilla protest outside the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, India.

According to the eyewitnesses in New Delhi, the march began near Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road, however, the Delhi Police soon arrived and started detaining protestors, with videos on social media showing that the officers are handling students with force.

The Secretary of SFI Delhi, Aishe Ghosh, said, "It is a travesty that while international activists face abduction for providing humanitarian aid, students in India are being silenced for standing in solidarity.”

Various university student groups from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Ambedkar University issued statements, condemning the police's action and showing solidarity with detained protestors.

The protestors were demonstrating to condemn the Israeli navy's interception of the Freedom Flotilla vessel Madleen, which led to the arrest of the 12 volunteers onboard, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was eventually deported along with some other volunteers.

Some of the volunteers remain in detention in Israel, including EU parliament member Rima Hassan, who is of Palestinian ethnicity.
