Iran has strongly criticized recent threats issued by the United States against Oman, calling them an attempt to “blackmail an independent state and UN member state.” The condemnation follows remarks by US officials, including President Donald Trump, who warned of severe consequences if Oman were to align with Iran in imposing tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
US Threats Spark Outrage in Iran
On Thursday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington would “aggressively target any actors involved” in imposing tolls in the Strait of Hormuz. The day before, President Trump went further, threatening to “blow up” Oman if it joined Iran in charging fees for ships transiting the strategically vital waterway.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Friday, denouncing the threats as “completely unlawful” and a breach of international norms. The ministry emphasized that such actions violate sovereignty and diplomatic principles, urging the US to refrain from coercive measures against sovereign nations.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to regional stability, stating that any measures taken by Gulf states regarding maritime navigation must align with international law and mutual respect.
International Community Urged to Uphold Sovereignty
The Iranian statement called on the international community to condemn the US threats and uphold the sovereignty of independent states. It warned that such aggressive rhetoric could destabilize the region and undermine diplomatic efforts.
As tensions rise, the episode underscores the fragile balance of power in the Gulf and the potential for miscalculations in an already volatile region. Both Iran and Oman have yet to issue further responses, but the situation remains closely watched by global observers.
