Iran has released Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi from prison to a hospital in Tehran on bail, her family’s foundation announced on Sunday. The move comes as concerns grow over her deteriorating health.
According to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation, the 54-year-old activist was transferred by ambulance from Zanjan Prison to Tehran Pars Hospital, where she is receiving specialized care from her medical team. The foundation emphasized her need for permanent, specialized treatment and stated that every effort must be made to ensure she never returns to prison.
Mohammadi, who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize while incarcerated, has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and against the death penalty in Iran. Her family recently reported that she suffered a suspected heart attack, raising urgent concerns about her well-being.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee had previously called for her release, but Mohammadi has faced repeated arrests and sentences due to her activism. One of her detentions was linked to remarks she made at a memorial for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, according to prosecutors.
Her temporary release to a hospital marks a significant, though likely fleeting, respite in her prolonged legal battles and imprisonment.
