The most fatal climate catastrophe in human history occurred from 1876-1878 as a strong El Niño caused severe droughts, crop failures, famine and disease in Asia, Africa and South America. Historians have estimated millions of people were killed as food shortages worsened and governments were unable to do anything about them. But today, researchers are looking into the effects that such an extreme El Niño pattern might have on a rapidly warming world — and an intriguing question: could humanity cope as well today?
