Bahrain has expanded its ban on single-use plastic bags, now targeting all bags thinner than 57 microns. The move, announced by Industry and Commerce Minister Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro, covers the manufacture, import, and sale of these bags.

The decision is part of the Kingdom’s ongoing effort to cut plastic waste and promote eco-friendly practices, supporting Bahrain’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

What’s included—and what isn’t

The ban applies to shopping and transport bags of all types, with or without handles, whether given free at checkout or sold separately.

Certain bags are exempt, including household garbage bags, medical waste bags, food and medicine packaging, and bags meant for export.

Businesses get six months to adjust

Authorities will monitor compliance closely, checking products before they enter the country and conducting market inspections to ensure stores follow the rules.

To help businesses transition, a detailed guideline in Arabic and English will be released. Companies have six months to clear out existing stock and align with the new standards.

Bahrain pushes sustainability agenda

This measure builds on previous restrictions on plastic products and forms part of a larger sustainability strategy in the Kingdom. By tightening the rules, Bahrain aims to reduce environmental impact and encourage greener alternatives across industries.
