Khalil’s journey began in the early 1950s, when he opened a small, humble shop that would later grow into one of the Kingdom’s most beloved heritage destinations. Established in its present form in 1970, Haji Café has stood for more than seven decades as a living symbol of “Zaman Al-Tayyibin”—an era defined by simplicity, sincerity, and community.
At the heart of the café’s enduring identity was a philosophy instilled by its founder and passed down through generations: food is a blessing to be respected, not stored or wasted. All meals, including the café’s famed traditional cream, are prepared fresh daily and aligned with the call to prayer.
“Take your daily sustenance, but do not take more than you need,” his son Zuhair Khalil explained, reflecting the values that shaped the café’s approach to hospitality and authenticity.
Over the years, Haji Café evolved into far more than a neighborhood eatery. It became a global destination—welcoming locals, artisans, families, and visitors from around the world to share tables in the heart of Manama’s old souq. As Zuhair described it, the café remains a “home for everyone,” standing firm amid the rise of modern malls and commercial dining concepts.
Today, the legacy of Haji Ghulam Hussain Khalil lives on through his children—Zuhair, Ahmed, and Adel, along with his three daughters—who continue to preserve the spirit of the café and the heritage it represents. His passing marks the end of a chapter, but the warmth, humility, and tradition he built continue to welcome generations to come.
