Representing the newly upgraded Bahrain Space Agency, Sheikha Hessa delivered the Kingdom’s official speech at the session. Her leadership role reflects a growing recognition of Arab women in science, diplomacy, and global decision-making.

Bahrain’s Rising Role in Space

In her speech, Sheikha Hessa highlighted Bahrain’s recent accomplishments in space exploration:

  • Launch of "Al Munther": Bahrain’s first Earth-observing satellite, developed entirely by local talent.
  • CO₂Sat Project: Completion of the second phase of a joint initiative with the UK to monitor carbon emissions.
  • AI in Space: Ongoing cooperation with Oman to test artificial intelligence technologies in outer space.
  • Arab Satellite “813”: Bahrain’s contribution to this regional project aimed at studying climate change.
  • Lunar Missions: Participation in three moon-related missions, showcasing Bahrain’s expanding space capabilities.

A Win for Women in STEM and Arab Leadership

After the session, Sheikha Hessa stated that her appointment is a reflection of the international community’s trust in Arab women and their potential to lead in science, space, and innovation. She also emphasized the Bahrain Space Agency’s dedication to promoting peace, transparency, and sustainable development in outer space.

She reiterated Bahrain’s full support for UN initiatives such as “Space for Women” and “Space for Water,” and confirmed the Kingdom’s efforts to help developing nations access space technologies. Bahrain is also actively working to reduce space debris and enhance the safety of space traffic.

A Diplomatic and Scientific Milestone for Bahrain

The unanimous support for Sheikha Hessa’s appointment from all COPUOS member states highlights Bahrain’s growing influence in global space policy. Her role also comes shortly after the transition of the National Space Science Agency into the newly structured Bahrain Space Agency, which now carries broader strategic responsibilities.

What is COPUOS?

COPUOS is the United Nations’ main platform for international cooperation in space exploration, the peaceful use of outer space, and long-term sustainability efforts. Having Bahrain represented in a leadership position at this level is a major achievement both scientifically and diplomatically.

A Powerful Symbol for Women and Bahrain

Shaikha Hessa’s historic appointment isn’t just a win for Bahrain... It’s a powerful symbol of progress for Arab women in STEM, leadership, and global governance. As the region’s presence in space exploration grows, this milestone signals a bright future ahead.
