A devastating fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata, eastern India, killing at least 14 people, police confirmed on Wednesday.
The blaze started on Tuesday evening at the Rituraj Hotel, located in central Kolkata. According to senior police officer Manoj Kumar Verma, six fire engines were deployed to bring the fire under control after several hours of effort. The cause of the fire is still unknown, officials told the Associated Press (AP).

Shocking images and videos shared by local media show guests attempting to escape through narrow ledges and windows, highlighting the chaos and desperation as smoke engulfed the building. Emergency responders were seen helping people down ladders and carrying the injured out of the premises.
Authorities are continuing to investigate how the fire began and whether the hotel complied with safety regulations. Meanwhile, rescue teams and local officials have been working to identify the victims and assist their families.
