For many years, Mercury was regarded as a dry, barren, and unpromising planet, a little rock too burnt to be very interesting, compared to its more intriguing neighbors. The scientists supposed there were few things left to be learned about this extreme planet. Observations made by NASA missions, however, found some unexpected things that led to questions of the already accepted beliefs. Mysterious surface features, odd deposits of ice, and an unexpectedly large core made Mercury much more complicated than they thought. This discovery has changed our view of the tiniest planet in the Solar System.
