For a statement such as “NASA supercomputers determined there will be the end of life on earth,” it is just a guess and a countdown with an uncertain and indefinite time horizon. But Earth's long-term habitability is studied via climate modelling, astrophysics and planetary simulations. The studies examine the possibility of environmental changes like changing climate, atmospheric conditions, and the evolution of the sun potentially making Earth inhabitable at some time in the future. A “deadline” is not the best way to visualize the end of habitability; in fact, research indicates that it will be a gradual change over billions of years, driven by a complex set of natural processes.
