For more than two thousand years, looters worked their way through the Etruscan necropolis at San Giuliano, breaking into tomb after tomb until almost nothing was left undisturbed. Then, in back-to-back digging seasons, archaeologists from Baylor University found two chambers the tombaroli never reached. The second, uncovered just metres from the first, was still sealed exactly as it had been left around 2,600 years ago, an exceptionally rare survival that is now offering a genuine, untouched look at how the Etruscans buried their dead.
