A genomic study analyzing the DNA of more than one hundred and sixty dog breeds confirmed what many owners and researchers had long suspected which is that some domestic breeds are genetically far closer to their wolf ancestors than others. The study mapped thousands of genetic markers across breeds and identified a cluster of ancient dogs whose DNA profiles barely differ from wild wolves.
