Ali Daylami, a New York-based theatre producer originally from Bahrain, just scored a major milestone—he's officially the first person from Bahrain and the entire GCC to be nominated for a Tony Award, the theatre world’s ultimate stamp of approval.

His nomination? It's for the 2024 Broadway musical “Maybe Happy Ending,” which debuted in November and has been racking up rave reviews. Heavy-hitting outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Entertainment Weekly all included the show in their year-end “best of” lists.

But Ali's journey to Broadway wasn’t exactly a straight shot. He previously worked at Bahrain’s Economic Development Board before trading in policy memos for playbills. He later earned a degree in Theatre Management from Columbia University and went on to work behind-the-scenes on huge shows like Wicked and The Heart of Rock and Roll.

While the Tony nomination has his name on it, Ali says it’s way bigger than him: “This isn’t just about me—it’s for everyone in Bahrain who dares to dream big.”

The Tony Awards 2025 go live on June 8, and all eyes in the Arab theatre scene—and beyond—are on Ali. Whether or not he takes home the statue, he’s already made history.
