UK, France, & Canada Threaten Israel with Sanctions
Western powers warn Israel of targeted sanctions amid growing international outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The United Kingdom, Canada, and France released a joint statement on Monday, May 19, threatening Israel with sanctions if they do not stop the military offensive in Gaza.
The joint statement reads, "The Israeli Government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law."
We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank. … We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions," the statement read.
On Monday, five UN trucks of humanitarian aid were allowed into Gaza after Israel was pressured by its allies. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a strong warning about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing that "two people are starving" in the enclave.
