Bahrain is moving forward with plans to construct a second tunnel in Buri as part of a broader infrastructure initiative designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve road flow along Sheikh Khalifa Street, officials and local sources confirmed on Monday, January 19.
According to a report from Akhbar Al Khaleej, the proposed project will include a parallel tunnel on the northern side of Buri, alongside other significant road enhancements such as flyover bridges on Sheikh Khalifa Street to alleviate heavy traffic and streamline connections to neighbouring areas.
The existing tunnel in the area has reached full capacity during peak hours, prompting authorities to explore additional measures to ease pressure on the current traffic network and enhance commuter experiences. A second tunnel aims to improve traffic flow, reduce wait times, and boost overall road safety.
The tunnel plan is part of the Buri Detailed Master Plan, which remains in the coordination stage between relevant authorities following several technical reviews in preparation for approval and future implementation. Officials have emphasised the importance of careful planning to align the project with broader urban development goals.
In addition to the tunnel, the development blueprint includes a major new intersection designed to connect Buri with key localities such as Salmabad, Zayed City, and A’ali, while also supporting ongoing growth in Janabiya and surrounding districts.
Looking ahead to 2030, plans for the Buri area also envision the King Hamad Metro Station emerging as a central hub in Bahrain’s future metro network, as well as the establishment of the largest fully air-conditioned central market with modern logistics facilities, further integrating transport and economic development in the region.
Officials say that the additional tunnel, once complete, will significantly enhance daily travel for motorists and contribute to Bahrain’s broader vision of modern and efficient transportation infrastructure.
