Works Begin for Airport-to-Seef Metro Line

Preparatory works have officially started on the Airport-to-Seef metro route, a central section of the first phase of Bahrain’s planned metro network, marking a major milestone in the kingdom’s efforts to expand modern public transport infrastructure.

His Excellency Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, confirmed that the ministry has begun route works under the approved project plan and is coordinating with relevant authorities to advance construction for this key corridor.

The Airport-to-Seef line, along with the Juffair-to-Isa Town line, will form the backbone of Phase One of the Bahrain Metro, which aims to give commuters a reliable mass-transit alternative to private cars and improve traffic flow across Bahrain’s most-traveled routes.

In response to a parliamentary question from MP Lulwa Ali Al Rumaihi, Dr Shaikh Abdulla highlighted that the metro project should shorten journey times, enhance daily travel convenience for residents and visitors, and support the kingdom’s shift toward a more sustainable transport system.

Officials also noted that Bahrain’s metro plans are being developed in coordination with the GCC Railway project, though the two schemes are managed separately. This alignment is intended to ensure future linkage between Bahrain’s internal metro network and broader Gulf rail infrastructure ambitions without one project impeding the other’s progress.

Phase One is expected to include 20 stations with major interchange hubs in key urban centres such as Bahrain Financial Harbour and the Central Market in Manama, designed to serve both residential and commercial districts throughout the route.

While the total cost for the metro network has not yet been finalised, pending detailed design and market assessments, authorities remain focused on advancing the project’s development to reduce congestion on major roadways and boost the share of travel by public transport.

The start of works on the Airport-to-Seef line represents a tangible step toward realising Bahrain’s long-term vision for a modern, efficient transit system that supports economic growth and enhances quality of life.
