The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain has unveiled a new set of rules and technical guidelines designed to combat fraudulent SMS scams that have been targeting mobile users across the Kingdom.
Developed in partnership with Bahrain’s mobile operators, the initiative follows the creation of a joint working group dedicated to enhancing online safety and consumer protection amid rising digital threats.
According to the TRA, the comprehensive guidelines outline detection, blocking, and prevention mechanisms for operators to minimize fraudulent SMS activity. They also include measures to raise public awareness, simplify scam reporting, and ensure full compliance with Bahrain’s telecom and data protection laws.
“This collaboration with mobile operators highlights our shared commitment to protecting consumers,” said Sheikh Abdulla Bin Humood Al Khalifa, Director of Consumer and Communications at TRA. “By working together, we are enabling the public to use telecom services with greater confidence and security.”
TRA’s General Director, Philip Marnick, added, “These guidelines show what can be achieved when regulators and industry partners join forces. Our focus is on safeguarding the people of Bahrain from scams and ensuring their interests are fully protected.”
The TRA emphasized that this initiative marks a major step in strengthening Bahrain’s leadership in consumer protection and digital trust, as the Kingdom continues to modernize its telecommunications landscape and fortify public confidence in its digital infrastructure.
