McLaren is flying high in Florida. Oscar Piastri delivered a career-defining drive on Sunday to win the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, leading teammate Lando Norris to a commanding 1-2 finish and stretching his lead in the F1 Drivers’ Championship.

The Australian sensation took full advantage of a chaotic opening lap and some strategic brilliance under Virtual Safety Car conditions to snatch the lead from Max Verstappen, who had started from pole but faded to fourth by the flag.

“This is the one I really wanted to win,” Piastri said post-race. “The car was unbelievable today.”

Verstappen Slips, Russell Grabs Last Podium Spot

It all started with drama. A tense Lap 1 moment saw Verstappen and Norris clash in Turn 1, sending the Brit wide and opening the door for Kimi Antonelli and Piastri to sneak through. Verstappen’s early grip advantage was short-lived as Piastri made his move by Lap 14, with Norris muscling past Max just one lap later.

While the McLaren duo soared ahead, Mercedes’ George Russell capitalized on a Virtual Safety Car window to undercut Verstappen and take third — albeit finishing a massive 37 seconds behind the race winner.

Ferrari’s Team Orders Headache

Ferrari’s weekend was far from smooth. After a long radio back-and-forth, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc swapped positions twice in the closing laps, with Hamilton sarcastically suggesting the team “have a tea break” mid-decision. He later added, “That was not good teamwork.”

Eventually, Leclerc reclaimed seventh from Hamilton, while Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10 after a last-lap attempt on Hamilton that’s now under investigation.

Standout Drives & Ones to Forget

  • Alex Albon starred in fifth, bagging big points for Williams.

  • Antonelli stayed sharp to secure sixth, beating both Ferraris.

  • Yuki Tsunoda snuck into tenth but earned a five-second penalty for pit lane speeding.

  • Aston Martin had a shocker, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll finishing a quiet 15th and 16th.

  • Four DNFs included Jack Doohan, who was out on Lap 1, and Gabriel Bortoleto, who triggered a second VSC after stopping on track.

Championship Update

With his fourth win of the season, Piastri now holds 131 points, extending his lead over Norris by 26. Verstappen, who’s still yet to win a Miami GP despite multiple poles, sits third on 99 points.
