Al Ain Zoo introduces baby southern white rhinoceros to its new family

Al Ain, UAE, October 28th, 2021: Al Ain Zoo is happy to announce that it has welcomed a new member of the family, a baby southern white rhinoceros, which is to be Introduced with a group of four rhinos the Zoo is already home to in the Mixed African Exhibit.

The Introduction of the newborn rhino comes as part of the Zoo’s programs and strategies to breed and Enhance the numbers of this endangered species, which is included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

The Zoo has formulated a coherent care program for rhinos according to the best international standards and practices by providing an environment as close as possible to the natural habitats in which the wild rhinos live. In addition, the Zoo has nutritional and behavioral requirements, as well as a comprehensive health care system provided by competent vets and animal care specialists.

The complex process of training the young 8-month-old rhino to be able to integrate with others begins with the animal care specialist forming a strong bond through behavioral training and positive reinforcement, which mainly aims to facilitate the daily requirements of caring for the animals. This training usually takes place with ultimate care for the safety of the specialist and the animals in a segregated area dedicated for that purpose.

In addition to caring for its family of rhinos, Al Ain Zoo is supporting the protection and conservation of wild black and white rhinos through its partnership with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya. Al Ain Zoo’s support helps Lewa to track each individual rhino to protect them from illegal poachers, monitor their health and carry out important research. As a key role of modern zoos, this is one of several commitments the zoo has made to conserving endangered species in the wild, in addition to educating zoo visitors about these amazing and beautiful creatures.
