Few places on earth understand extreme heat the way the UAE does. Between the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation’s midday work ban, now in its 22nd year, and a public realm built almost entirely around air conditioning, the country has spent decades refining how to live well through a brutal summer. Europe, by contrast, is only now catching up, after the continent’s deadliest heatwave in 2003 killed an estimated 15,000 people in France alone, with France in the middle of one of its hottest summers on record as this is being written. That catching-up process has thrown up some genuinely clever, low-cost ideas worth knowing about, even in a country that is, in many ways, already ahead of the curve.
