About the King Fahd Causeway
The King Fahd Causeway is a vital transport link connecting Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia to Al Jasra in Bahrain. Spanning approximately 25 kilometres (15.5 miles), the structure consists of bridges and reclaimed land stretching across the Gulf of Bahrain.
The idea for the project dates back to 1954, during a visit by King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to Bahrain. Planning progressed further in 1965, following discussions between Bahraini and Saudi leadership. The causeway was officially inaugurated in November 1986 in the presence of King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, after whom the bridge was named.
Constructed at a cost of around $800 million (SAR3 billion), the causeway features four traffic lanes and roadways measuring 11.6 metres wide. The project used approximately 350,000 cubic metres of concrete and 147,000 metric tonnes of reinforced steel, making it one of the region’s most significant infrastructure developments.
With the addition of free public Wi-Fi, the King Fahd Causeway continues to modernise its services, offering greater convenience to the thousands of travellers who use the crossing daily.
