Buying stocks wasn't something done online or with a smartphone before these; it was a slow and personal process before. It was all paper, the trust of brokers and the clasp of the investor's hands to purchase a stake in a company. Each exchange had to be patient and each certificate was a genuine fortune. After reading through the accounts of buying stock a hundred years ago, it's not hard to imagine that there was a whole other world of finance that existed that was more paper, more people, and more careful investing.
