England Needs to Address Two Major Issues Before the World Cup Knockouts

England head into the World Cup knockout rounds as one of the tournament favourites, with Thomas Tuchel’s side topping Group L after beating Croatia 4-2, drawing 0-0 with Ghana and seeing off Panama 2-0. They now face DR Congo in the last 32 in Atlanta on Wednesday, 1 July. Topping the group with seven points from three games is a solid return on paper, but the performances along the way have exposed two problems that pundits, and Tuchel himself, have openly acknowledged. Neither is fatal on its own, but left unresolved, either could end England’s tournament sooner than the Football Association would like.
