Driving Innovation and Economic Growth
Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, Chief Executive of the iGA, explained that the policy is designed to boost economic and social growth, enhance government efficiency, and ensure ethical AI practices. It aligns with the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on responsible AI use that meets both national and international standards.
The policy emphasizes strict compliance with key Bahraini laws and frameworks, including the Personal Data Protection Law, the Law on the Protection of State Documents and Information, and the Open Data Policy. It also incorporates guidelines from the GCC Manual on the Ethical Use of AI, ensuring that AI development respects privacy, fairness, and security.
Building AI Talent and Awareness
A key part of the initiative is educating and training national talent to use AI ethically and professionally. The iGA plans to conduct workshops and training programs for public sector employees, especially in vital areas like healthcare, education, and public services. These efforts aim to strengthen Bahrain’s competitiveness on both regional and global stages.
Making Public Services Smarter
The government is committed to integrating AI into public services to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and deliver better results for citizens and residents. By following a unified framework, Bahrain aims to ensure that all AI-related initiatives and investments are aligned to maximise benefits and strengthen public trust in advanced technologies.
Policy Focus and Target Audience
The National Policy is designed for government officials, developers of digital services, academics, researchers, decision-makers, and users of smart government services. It is built on four main pillars:
- Commitment to national laws and policies
- Encouraging AI adoption in government operations
- Empowering employees with AI skills and knowledge
- Strengthening partnerships to support innovation
Ethical AI for the Future
The GCC Guiding Manual on the Ethical Use of AI complements the national policy, focusing on values like respect for human dignity, Islamic principles, sustainability, and cooperation. It is based on four ethical principles: protecting human autonomy, ensuring safety, promoting fairness, and safeguarding privacy.
Building Trust and a Digital Future
By combining the national AI policy with the ethical charter, Bahrain is setting a strong foundation for responsible AI governance. This initiative aims to boost public confidence, support digital transformation, and create a sustainable, innovation-driven society.
This strategic approach positions Bahrain as a leader in the ethical and innovative use of AI in the Gulf region.
