On Monday, the United Nations announced the dismissal of nine employees from its Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, over their alleged involvement in the October 7 attack on southern Israel by Hamas. The attack, which led to ongoing conflict in Gaza, triggered an investigation by the UN's oversight body.
Dismissals Follow Investigation
UN spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that there is enough evidence to justify the firing of these employees, although further steps may be taken to verify the findings. The allegations, initially raised by Israel, led to significant funding suspensions from several governments, including the United States, which has since resumed its contributions.
Impact of the Conflict
The attack resulted in 1,197 deaths and the capture of 251 hostages, with 111 still held by Hamas. Israel's retaliatory actions have claimed at least 39,550 lives in Gaza, according to local health officials.
UNRWA, which has been providing aid to Palestinian refugees since 1949, has faced ongoing criticism from Israel. Earlier this year, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini called for an end to what he described as "outrageous" attacks on the organization's operations.
