Bahrain Population 2025 - Trends and Projections

In mid-2025, Bahrain’s population is projected to reach approximately 1.64 million people, marking steady growth from around 1.61 million earlier this year. This places Bahrain around 153rd worldwide, covering just 0.02% of the global population. With a population density exceeding 2,100 people per square kilometer, it's one of the most densely populated nation-states globally. Nearly the entire population lives in urban areas, and the median age is around 33.4 years.

Population Growth: What’s Driving It?

Bahrain’s population is experiencing growth rates between 0.9% to 2.4%. While birth rates contribute to the rise, migration remains the dominant factor, with tens of thousands of people moving to Bahrain each year. However, experts suggest that this pace of growth may slow in the coming years due to shifts in migration trends and regional employment demands.

Demographic Profile: Age, Gender & Urban Life

Bahrain has a young and largely working-age population. About 76% are between 15 and 64 years old, only around 3% are over 65, and around 20% are under the age of 14. The gender balance is notably skewed, with approximately 62% male and 38% female, largely due to the high number of male expatriates working in labor sectors. Almost everyone lives in urban areas, reflecting Bahrain’s city-driven lifestyle.

Native Bahrainis vs. Expats

Non-nationals make up over 50% of Bahrain’s population. In fact, expats slightly outnumber Bahraini citizens. This international mix significantly influences the social and cultural landscape, bringing a wide variety of languages, cuisines, and work habits into everyday life.

Breakdown of Expat Communities

The largest expatriate communities in Bahrain come from South and Southeast Asia. Key groups include:

  • Indians (approximately 350,000)
  • Bangladeshis (around 150,000)
  • Pakistanis (about 110,000)
  • Filipinos (estimated 40,000)
  • Other communities include Egyptians, Sri Lankans, and smaller Western groups

Most expats are employed in the private sector, especially in industries such as construction, domestic work, retail, and hospitality.

Gender Imbalance and Social Impacts

The high number of male laborers contributes to a gender imbalance in Bahrain’s overall population. This affects not only the labor market but also social dynamics, family life, and housing demand. The country continues to adapt policies to better support a balanced, inclusive environment for both nationals and expats.

Future Outlook: 2026 and Beyond

By the end of 2025, population estimates vary slightly but generally hover around 1.63 to 1.64 million. Some projections expect numbers to reach close to 1.86 million by early 2026. While growth is still steady, a gradual slowdown is anticipated due to evolving immigration policies and declining fertility rates. Bahrain is expected to maintain a youthful, diverse, and heavily urbanized population well into the future.

Why It Matters: Policy, Economy & Society

Understanding Bahrain’s population structure is key to effective planning in healthcare, education, urban development, and employment. The large expat population drives much of the private sector and helps fuel economic growth, while also creating a need for culturally inclusive policies and services. These demographic insights are vital for shaping the country's next chapter.
