Frida hardly ever painted herself alone. A monkey at her shoulder, a cat in the shadows, a dog near her feet, a bird off to one side, sometimes even a deer standing in for her own body. None of it filler. Each animal does real work, saying things about her pain and her grief that she never once put into words.
