Muharraq Set for National Stadium and New Health Centre

Big changes could be coming to Muharraq.

Lawmakers have approved a series of proposals that include building a national stadium, opening a new health centre in Busaiteen, and setting up a Supreme Council for Food Security.

Here’s what that means in real terms.

National Stadium Planned for Muharraq

Muharraq, home to more than 120,000 residents, currently does not have a fully equipped venue for national-level sports events.

MPs, including Khalid Saleh Buanaq and Hisham Abdulaziz Al Awadhi, pushed for the construction of a national stadium to fill that gap. The proposal received backing from Parliament’s Services Committee.

Supporters say expanding sports infrastructure is part of wider development plans for the governorate, giving local athletes and the community a proper venue for major matches and events.

New Health Centre in Busaiteen

Healthcare is also on the agenda.

Parliament approved a proposal to build a new health centre in Busaiteen, citing growing population numbers and heavy pressure on existing facilities.

Currently, many residents head to King Hamad University Hospital for urgent care, where waiting times can stretch from six to eight hours.

Land near Al Hasan Mosque has already been allocated for the new centre, and lawmakers recommended including the project in the upcoming state budget.

Supreme Council for Food Security

Beyond sports and healthcare, Parliament also approved the creation of a Supreme Council for Food Security.

The council will centralise oversight and improve coordination between ministries, as food security becomes an increasing national priority amid global supply chain disruptions.

In short, Muharraq could soon see upgrades on multiple fronts — from stadium lights to shorter hospital queues — as Parliament pushes forward projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and long-term resilience.
