Vance Says Nuclear Talks to Begin This Week

US Vice President JD Vance has indicated that critical nuclear discussions are poised to commence this week, potentially starting as early as Monday. Speaking from the resort town where high-level peace negotiations are underway, Vance expressed confidence that technical dialogues involving international inspectors would begin imminently.

"I expect that will happen at the minimum this week," Vance stated. He further elaborated on the immediacy of the situation, adding, "But we think even some of those conversations with the inspectors and with the IAEA could happen as soon as today." His comments suggest a rapid escalation in the technical phase of the diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving long-standing disputes over Iran's nuclear program.

The announcement comes shortly after the conclusion of the first round of broader talks between the United States, Iran, and mediators Qatar and Pakistan on Sunday. While the preliminary sessions focused heavily on regional security, the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, and the Strait of Hormuz, the path toward nuclear resolution was identified as the next critical step.

However, accounts of the initial meeting's content remain conflicted. Iranian media outlets reported that no substantive discussions regarding the nuclear issue had taken place during the Sunday session. Despite these reports, US officials maintain that the groundwork for immediate technical engagement has been laid, with the expectation that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and relevant inspectors will enter the dialogue within days if not hours.

As negotiators continue their work in Switzerland, the timeline set by Vice President Vance places significant pressure on all parties to move swiftly from general diplomatic posturing to concrete verification measures. The success of these upcoming meetings will likely determine whether the current momentum can translate into a durable framework for nuclear compliance.
