Kuwait's Jasem Al-Budaiwi Appointed as New GCC Secretary General

Kuwait will retain the office of Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as Jasem Al-Budaiwi has been appointed to assume the duties of GCC head on Wednesday, February 1st, succeeding Nayef Al-Hajraf.

Kuwait's Al-Hajraf, who took office in 2020, welcomed the newly-appointed chief and congratulated him on assuming his duties, wishing him success in performing the responsibilities entrusted to him to strengthen cooperation among GCC countries.

Al-Budaiwi was most recently Kuwait's ambassador to the US and previously served as Kuwait's ambassador to Belgium, the European Union between 2017 and 2022, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) between 2016 and 2022.

In a statement on Sunday, Al-Hajraf said that Al-Budaiwi's diplomatic career would "undoubtedly contribute to strengthening the regional and international status of the Gulf Cooperation Council, preserving the council’s gains and working towards more achievements to serve member states and the people of the GCC."

Al-Budaiwi holds a bachelors' degree in Mass Communications from the University of Utah in 1991, and received a Diploma in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Oxford in 1993.

Kuwait's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah presented on Sunday to His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Sabah the newly-assigned GCC head at Bayan Palace.
