Bahrain Tightens Traffic Law With Tougher Penalties for Dangerous Driving

Bahrain just gave its Traffic Law a major upgrade. After the Shura Council approved a fresh batch of amendments, the Kingdom is officially stepping up its crackdown on dangerous driving—from running red lights to driving under the influence.

What’s Changing

The new rules introduce higher penalties for some of the most common and dangerous violations. Expect stricter consequences if you’re caught:

  • Speeding

  • Running red lights

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

The Penal Code was also updated to increase penalties for manslaughter and accidental injury caused by reckless driving. The message is clear: unsafe behavior on the road won’t be taken lightly.

Why the Tougher Rules

Officials say Bahrain has seen an unusual rise in reckless driving lately, and the community has been calling for stronger deterrents. The Council said the new penalties are firm but fair—designed to improve road safety without going overboard.

Faster Handling of Cases

To speed up traffic-related rulings, the maximum fines that minor court judges and public prosecutors can issue through summary orders have been raised. This means certain cases can be processed quicker, easing the load on the system.

What About Dash Cams?

Council members also asked how the new law will handle dash cam footage and whether these videos will be officially accepted when investigating accidents. More clarity on that is expected as the updates roll out.
